RTX: Wireless Healthcare Solutions

Since RTX began serving the medical industry in 2001, it has been involved with several projects developing customised wireless devices for use in both hospitals and home patient monitoring environments. Monitoring patients remotely with wireless solutions can help minimise healthcare costs. Leading analysts predict exponential market growth in this sector.

RTX has been developing custom and standard radio modules since 1993.  A project in the past year has been designing a miniaturized radio module for portable patient monitoring devices. A solution for ambulatory patients in hospitals required two-way communications between a patient worn transceiver and an information centre via access points over a wide area to carry information regarding each patient’s vital signs for real-time monitoring, display, alarm detection, operator alerts, data storage and permanent recording.

The RTX wireless solution enables the mobility of ambulatory patients in a wide coverage area within a hospital via a wireless protocol adapted from Digital Enhanced Communications Technology (DECT) with which RTX has a world leading expertise. The frequency hopping solution avoids interference and locates the strongest relevant signal wherever the patient roams within the medical centre. Dynamic wireless channel allocation ensures the best use of the spectrum allocation.

The patient monitors can be used for a multiplicity of vital patient sensor data including blood pressure, blood glucose monitoring, heart rate, pulse rate, body fat analysers. Such monitors can also be used by the patients outside of health centres by adding a DECT to internet protocol (IP) gateway in the home.

Jens Christian Lindof, Vice President at RTX, comments “The rigorous demands for wireless communications in the highly regulated medical space provide multiple challenges. RTX is one of the few wireless solutions companies with the depth of knowledge in all aspects of sophisticated wireless networks to be able to design cost-effective and robust solutions that can be manufactured in volume.”

RTX supplies wireless solutions not only to medical turn-key OEM manufacturers addressing healthcare solutions in hospitals, but additionally to OEMs offering health care services and solutions in the home. A good example is monitoring of glucose levels in patients at home. In Europe where DECT infrastructure is already present in millions of homes, a RTX ULE solution could be used to provide services such as alarm activation, remote monitoring and also emergency telephony.  In the US, where Wi-Fi networks are more prevalent, RTX ultra low-power 802.11 standard modules in combination with cloud ecosystem provides a quick path to real-time patient data visualization and analysis via any smart phone or internet connected pc.

RTX has been at the forefront of design and manufacture of customised wireless modules that enable the transfer of patient data to monitoring stations within hospitals throughout the USA and Europe.
